Cable and Spring Replacement in Bundoora, Melbourne

Newly installed black torsion spring mounted above a sectional garage door with the door arm bracket visible below in Bundoora, Melbourne.

About this project

Our team headed to Bundoora after a residential property owner reported their sectional garage door had become difficult to lift. On inspection, the door clearly needed cable and spring replacement. Heavy corrosion had eaten into the torsion spring and the cables showed wear from a spring that had struggled for some time.

A rusted spring is not just an inconvenience. Corrosion eats into the metal and the spring loses its tension. In that state it can snap without warning. The energy releases violently, and it can damage the door, the tracks, or anything nearby. On a sectional door, the spring and cables work as a system. The spring counterbalances the weight and the cables carry that force through the drum and lift the panels evenly. When either part fails, the door can drop or jam mid-travel so that puts strain on the motor and the whole assembly.

Our team removed the failed torsion spring and the worn cables. Rust had eaten right through the old spring, so it was well overdue. We fitted a new torsion spring that matches the door’s weight and size. Then, we ran new cables through the drums on both sides. We tensioned them evenly across the full width of the door and finally, we checked and tightened all anchor points and drum fixings, then wound the spring to its correct turn count.

With the new spring and cables in place, we cycled the door several times. It ran smoothly and evenly through the full range of travel. We carried out a safety inspection to make sure everything was working properly.

Does your sectional door feel heavier than usual by hand? Look for fraying on the cables near the bottom brackets. Both are early signs the system is under stress. Book a check before a spring or cable lets go completely.
