Garage Door Repair – Problems and Fixes in Petrie Terrace

A garage door (commonly called an overhead door) is one of the best things you can have in your home. They are extremely convenient and they can last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. Many people are unaware, however, that their garage door needs regular service, much like their automobile.

In this article, I will discuss one of my most common service calls, which is complaints of loud, grinding and scraping noises coming from their garage door. This is usually caused by old, worn out doors that have not received the proper maintenance over the years. The cause of these types of noises are varied, but here are the main reasons these sounds could be occurring:

  1. rust may have formed in the metal hinges of the garage door
  2. your overhead door bolts and nuts have worn out and need replaced
  3. extreme temperatures may have warped the door and affected the hinge functioning or placement
  4. the screw in your screw drive type door has not been sprayed (oiled)
  5. the garage door has not been properly maintained or serviced on a regular basis

In some cases, the use of a good silicone spray on springs, hinges and tracks can quiet a noisy overhead door. But this will largely depend on what type of door you have in your home. If this has not been done on a regular basis, serious damage may have been caused, requiring additional service. It's always important that if you are not sure exactly what type of garage door you have, you should immediately contact a professional so that the damage does not become worse and more costly to you. Never let grinding and screeching noise go on too long before you contact an overhead door professional in your area. The fact is, most garage door service needs can amount to minor repairs over placement, if attended to in time.

Before hiring a garage door service, there are a few things you should consider.

  1. make sure the door repair company is experienced in all types of overhead doors
  2. make sure the company you hire is experienced with the causes and repairs associated with grinding and screeching noises.
  3. Make sure the company you call is licensed to conduct business in your area. There are a lot of "fly by night" companies that do not have proper licenses. Always beware and insist on obtaining business license information.
  4. Be sure the garage door company can finish the repairs the same day service is started. I have heard horror stories of overhead door companies starting jobs and never returning to finish them.
  5. Be sure to check prices and understand the services fees up front. Most reputable companies will provide free estimates and free service calls with repair work.

How to Start Your Own Garage Floor Refinishing Service Business

Have you grown tired of that rusty or rotted garage door that never seems to work quite the way it should? If you're in need of some serious repair or maintenance, but don't want to pay a professional to do the work for you, then perhaps you can do the work on your own. Installing a new system on your own is definitely possible and only requires a few tools and the right knowledge. Within a few hours you can give a brand new look to your home.

The following steps will provide you with the basics of installing a pre-hung garage door. Remember, it's important that you maintain safety while performing this task, and always consult the instruction manual if any questions ever arise.

Position The Bottom Panel In The Doorway

Install weatherstripping on the bottom panel and position the panel in the doorway. Temporarily hold the panel in place by tapping nails through either side of the panel brackets into the door jamb. When the panel is in place, attach hinges to the upper edge of the panel.

Install The Tracks

After locating the first panel in the proper place, install the tracks for the garage door according to the instructions which should be found in the instruction manual.

Install Rollers

When the tracks have been set in place, install the rollers and any remaining brackets that either are to be installed onto the door itself or the wall frame, so that the door panels may be set into place.

Install The 1st Panel

Position one side of the panel into the tracks, and do the same for the other side.

Install The 2nd Panel

Prepare the second garage door panel by installing the rollers where necessary. When ready, lift the panel into place and insert the rollers into the tracks. You will want to get help from another person for this step.

Install the 3rd Panel

Prepare the third panel by installing the rollers as well as any brackets that are needed. Lift the panel into place and insert the rollers for this panel into the tracks. When the panel is in place, make sure the vertical tracks are fully fastened to the garage wall using lag bolts that are provided with the package At this point, make sure the door is level and the tracks are plumb.

Attach Jamb Brackets

Attach the jamb brackets and fasten them to the wall, ensuring that the lag screws are drilled into the solid framing boards for security.

Install Top Tracks

Install the curved and horizontal portions of the tracks according to the specifications set forth in the user manual. Be sure to rest the horizontal tracks on top of something so they do not swing free or fall down.

Install The Track Hanger

Check to see that the horizontal track is completely level. Attach the hanger mounting bracket to the ceiling in a solid position where the lag screws can be drilled into framing boards. Install one end of the hanger to the mounting bracket and then line up the hanger with the horizontal garage door track. Trim the hanger and then fasten the horizontal track to the hanger. Repeat this process on the other side with the other horizontal track section.

Install The Last Door Panel

When the horizontal track sections are in place, install the final door panel.

Install Torque Tube Or Tension Springs

If the garage door you are installing comes with a torque tube, you can install it according to the manufacturer specifications. If your garage door uses tension springs, you may need to call a professional because special tools are required to obtain the proper tension. Improperly installed springs can be a safety hazard for both property and people. When in doubt, call the professional.

If you have the right tools and the knowledge to complete the task, you can install that new system and give your home a new face lift.
